For more than 35 years, we have been developing and manufacturing functional footwear which combines the health benefits of walking barefoot with consumers’ exacting requirements for stylish aesthetics and durability.
Invigorating and supportive – that’s functional footwear from Joe Nimble!
It is scientifically proven that functional footwear successfully helps to prevent various foot disorders, back problems and poor posture. This is thanks to the asymmetrical last design (the ‘soul’ of your functional footwear). It allows uncompromising toefreedom and makes you feel like you’re walking barefoot. This shape, which is based on the shape of the human foot, is neither a passing fad nor esoteric nonsense. However, many manufacturers do not pay sufficient attention to foot shaped shoes.
There are four fundamental features which set functional footwear apart from the standard shoes produced by famous brands. We would like to take a closer look at these here:
Uncompromising (!) toefreedom
2.1 Uncompromising toefreedom ensures optimum agility and stability
The uncompromising toefreedom in functional footwear by Joe Nimble allows the big toe to act as an anchor and stabiliser. Humans can only move naturally and efficiently with toefreedom. As soon as this position is compromised – even slightly – the big toe loses its ability to fulfil this role with every millimetre more restriction imposed on it. This in turn has a negative effect on the person’s whole posture.
Carefully designed functional footwear also looks different from conventional shoes. This is due to the different lasts: they are made using asymmetrical lasts which reflect the natural shape of the foot. That means they are uncompromisingly wide at the front and narrow at the back.
By contrast, the widespread models designed by the fashionable footwear industry and bogus ‘barefoot shoe’ manufacturers are generally based on symmetrical lasts and restrict toefreedom. So why does a whole industry churn out something which is detrimental to health? It all centres on efficiency, because it is much simpler and cheaper to produce shoes using a symmetrical last. This phenomenon can be traced back to the industrial revolution, when manufacturing technology of all kinds was made more efficient and geared towards mass production. This was not done with consumers’ interests in mind.
People got used to symmetrical shoes and accepted this footwear, coming to see the varying degrees of restriction it placed on toefreedom as ‘normal’. We are not just talking about trendy, pointed shoes here: equally at fault are manufacturers who purport to produce barefoot shoes and really should know better!
Feet are as individual as people, and we all know that humans are complex:
With this in mind, there can never be a standard solution when it comes to toefreedom, nor should there be. Conventional, standardised shoes do not adequately cater for the anatomical variations in all the people who wear shoes. However, functional footwear with uncompromising toefreedom offers every wearer pleasant, healthy and unlimited comfort. On top of this, functional footwear relieves pressure on the spine. Be light on your feet and rediscover the joy of moving: it is a cornerstone of our evolution and gives us the freedom to achieve all manner of things – in day-to-day life, in sport and at work.
2.2 The zero heel promotes a natural posture
Functional footwear has zero heel, meaning that the ball of the foot and the heel are level with one another. This corresponds to humans’ natural posture. No one is born wearing heels and even thousands of years ago, people got through life without any shoes or with the most basic of footwear.
By contrast, conventional shoes these days have a raised heel. This means that the heel is higher than the ball of the foot, which often damages the wearer’s posture!
Raised heels create a misalignment which impairs the wearer’s balance and constantly has to be compensated for. To some extent, the wearer forgets how to stand correctly and would actually fall over if the whole body’s statics were not maintained by means of compensatory movements in the ankle, knee, hip and spine.
Ultimately, the misinformation conveyed by keeping the feet at this angle means that the joints are no longer in line and all of the muscle chains and fascial structures can no longer transfer energy efficiently. In addition to this, their natural elasticity is severely restricted and altered. Tenseness, strain, injuries and pain are the result.
Anatomical foot shape
2.3 Anatomical foot shape
Usually, people who are used to walking barefoot and have never worn shoes have a broad, flat forefoot and splayed toes which are in line with the metatarsals. This makes for a ‘fan-shaped’ foot.
By contrast, a shoe-shaped foot has a relatively narrow forefoot, the metatarsals are no longer aligned horizontally, and the toes are squashed, twisted and no longer in contact with the ground.
The prime characteristics of a ‘shoe-shaped’ foot are a compromised forefoot and toe anatomy and impaired function. In both cases, the feet are shoe-shaped and the metatarsals are misaligned in the horizontal view, which means that the ball of the foot no longer rolls using five metatarsal bones – instead, it generally uses just three. As less of the ball of the foot makes contact with the ground, there is additional pressure on the forefoot because the toes cannot function as ‘stabilisers’ if they are squashed together, raised and unable to splay flat on the ground. Increased pressure on the forefoot, instability resulting from the ball of the foot being unable to roll properly, and the associated impairment of the toes’ functionality are without doubt the greatest problems arising from ‘shoe-shaped’ feet and key risk factors for motion-related pain.
Proprioception and the sensorimotor system:
2.4 Functional Footwear for womens and the 'Goldilocks principle' of sensory feedback
Sensory feedback from the foot is important during activity but too much input can be just as problematic as too littleinput, causing changes in natural technique that can lead to injury. With the ´goldilocks principle´ at the forefront of our minds we have engeneered various thicknesses of soles to provide an amount of sensory feedback that is ´just right´, depending on e.g. activity, age, physical constitution; allowing an appropriate amount of sensory feedback to the foot but at the same time significantly reducing the risk of any potential painful input.
